Un habitat s'est développé sur la rive droite du Rhône dès le néolithique. A l'époque romaine et au début du Moyen-Âge, les gens vivaient sur la rive gauche, où l'on voit sur la vue la cathédrale Saint-Pierre sur le point culminant de la colline de la Cité.
Genève est devenue un centre de la Réforme grâce à l'action de Jean Calvin à partir de 1540 et a également été surnommée "la Rome réformée". Bien que la ville n'ait pu conclure des alliances qu'avec Berne, Soleure et Zurich à la fin du 16e siècle, Ebel nous dit qu'elle a toujours été considérée comme une ville confédérée. Cela faisait de Genève, vers 1800, la plus grande ville de Suisse avec environ 25 000 habitants, soit plus du double de Zurich.

Dès que la frontière avec le royaume de Savoie est franchie, le voyageur se retrouve dans une région très différente de la Confédération, du moins si l'on en croit le texte d'accompagnement : 
«Après avoir quitté Cologni le chemin s’éloigne des bords du lac, et traverse pendant sept lieues des terres mal cultivées, la petite ville de Thonon, ancienne capitale du Chablais, et de tristes villages ou tout annonce la pauvreté des habitants.»
Mais le soulagement de la touriste fatiguée par la monotonie du chemin est déjà en vue : l'élégant pavillon des Bains d'Amphion. Avant que la ville voisine d'Évian ne devienne une grande ville thermale à partir de 1823, Amphion était connue pour ses sources minérales ferrugineuses. Les trois raisons de la popularité du lieu, selon le texte d'accompagnement : son agréable situation, la beauté de son environnement et la bonne société qui s'y retrouve.

Saint-Gingolph est situé sur les rives du lac Léman, en face de Vevey, à la frontière entre la France et le Valais. De tout temps, le village a été divisé en deux. Au moment de la création de cette vue, il appartenait pour moitié au royaume de Sardaigne-Piémont et pour moitié au canton de Vaud. La frontière entre la France et la Suisse est formée par la rivière Morge, qui traverse le canton de Vaud et se jette dans le lac Léman.

L'extrémité orientale du lac Léman était surtout connue des touristes vers 1811 grâce au roman épistolaire de Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Julie ou la nouvelle Héloïse. Celui-ci était déjà paru en 1761 et a connu au moins 70 éditions jusqu'en 1800 - un véritable best-seller du 18e siècle. L'histoire d'amour tragique entre Julie, la fille d'un patricien, et son précepteur Saint-Preux a surtout servi à Rousseau pour exposer ses préoccupations sociales, économiques et culturelles. Elle est considérée comme le précurseur et le point de départ du romantisme. Gabriel Lory (père ?) nous offre une vue romantique sur le delta de l'estuaire du Rhône et la Dent de Jaman, le tout encadré par des arbres noueux.

Le Pont de St-Maurice
Text

Le château de St-Maurice a été construit à la fin du 15e siècle et entièrement détruit par un incendie à la fin du 17e siècle. Situé à l'entrée de la vallée du Rhône, le château a servi de siège à un gouverneur, de poste de garde et de douane et, entre le 18e et le 19e siècle, d'orphelinat et de maison de retraite.

Vue de la Cascade de Pissevache

La Pissevache se trouve sur la route entre Saint-Maurice et Martigny et a impressionné de nombreux voyageurs au 19e siècle. Elle est formée par le torrent de Salenche et avait alors une eau abondante. Robert Glutz von Blotzheim recommande de visiter la cascade le matin, car les rayons du soleil y dessinent un arc-en-ciel. Depuis 1953, une partie de l'eau en amont de la Pissevache est détournée pour produire de l'électricité. Depuis, elle paraît beaucoup moins imposante.

La première vue de Sion a été dessinée depuis le Mont d'Orge. Le texte qui l'accompagne n'est pas très flatteur pour les Valaisans : l'auteur écrit textuellement que "l'aspect des villages qu'on traverse prouve que les reproches de paresse et de mauvaise propreté qu'on fait aux Valaisans ne sont que trop fondés". En revanche, il classe Sion parmi les lieux les plus remarquables de Suisse en raison de ses maisons blanches, de ses deux châteaux et des glaciers qui l'entourent.

Pour ouvrir la voie de montagne par le Simplon, Gabriel Lory fils nous présente au premier abord une vue classique de la ville. Mais contrairement aux représentations antérieures de Brigue, c'est ici le passage des Alpes par le Simplon qui attire l'attention. La nouvelle route du col, qui monte régulièrement, a été commencée en 1801 sur ordre de l'empereur Napoléon (1769 - 1821) et achevée en 1805. Elle traverse l'ensemble de l'image et se dessine dans les pentes boisées à l'arrière-plan.

Au centre de la vue se trouve la ville de Brigue avec l'église des Jésuites et les tours du palais Stockalper, qui témoignent d'un ancien âge d'or du trafic du col. Au 17ème siècle, Kaspar Stockalper (1609 - 1691) avait déjà fait aménager une fois la route du col, alors qu'elle n'était guère fréquentée auparavant. Le contrôle du col augmenta sa richesse et lui valut à la cour royale française le titre officieux de "le roi du Simplon".

L'éviction de Stockalper en 1679 a entraîné une nouvelle dégradation de l'infrastructure. Le Simplon ne retrouva son importance internationale que grâce à l'aménagement ordonné par Napoléon.

Huit ponts et sept tunnels ainsi que de nombreux barrages et murs de soutènement permettent de surmonter les obstacles naturels. 
L'écrivain et archéologue français Désiré Raoul-Rochette (1789 - 1854) écrivait en 1820 : «Le passage du Simplon n’a rien, dans les travaux des hommes, qui lui soit comparable. C’est, sur un espace de quatorze lieues, de Brig à Domo-d’Ossola, une sorte de champ de bataille, où la nature et de l’art sont perpétuellement aux prises […]».

L'ingénieur en chef Nicolas Céard (1745 - 1821) avait prévu une pente régulière de 3 à 8 % sur tout le parcours et une largeur de route de 5 à 8 mètres. C'est pourquoi le tracé de la route ne pouvait pas suivre le chemin médiéval comme la route de Stockalper, mais devait longer les versants de la vallée, franchir des ruisseaux, traverser des corniches et les redoutables gorges de Gondo.

Sur le versant ouest du Mäderhorn, vers la vallée de la Taferna, la route traversait le tunnel de Schallbett, long d'environ 31 mètres. 
La route nationale construite à partir de 1960 suit en grande partie le tracé de la route de 1805, ce qui souligne l'extraordinaire performance des ingénieurs et constructeurs de routes de Napoléon. Toutefois, il ne reste presque plus rien de l'ancienne route. La galerie du lit du son a également été victime de la route nationale.

La galerie du glacier avec le tronçon de route représenté au premier plan est la seule partie de la route Napoléon conservée aujourd'hui dans son état du XIXe siècle sur le versant nord du Simplon. 
Nicolas Céard voulait à l'origine faire passer l'ensemble de la route dans un tunnel sur ce terrain exposé et difficile, en dessous du glacier Chaltwasser. Mais Napoléon n'a pas accepté ce projet gigantesque.

C'est un peu plus bas que le sommet du col, en direction de l'Italie, que Napoléon fit construire un hospice aux dimensions généreuses, sur le modèle du Grand Saint-Bernard. La construction a commencé en 1813, mais n'a été achevée qu'en 1831 par le canton du Valais, car la chute de Napoléon a interrompu les travaux. On peut toutefois voir le site de construction préparé dès 1808.

Le village du Simplon a toujours été directement dépendant de la route du col et du trafic qu'elle apportait. Après l'ouverture du tunnel ferroviaire du Simplon en 1906, la commune s'est sentie tellement coupée du reste de la Suisse qu'elle s'est abstenue de participer à une votation fédérale en 1907 en signe de protestation.

Le tronçon le plus exigeant de la route du Simplon passait par les gorges de Gondo. Les gorges étaient redoutables, tant pour les ingénieurs et les ouvriers que pour les voyageurs. Mais ces derniers semblent aussi avoir tiré un certain frisson de leur traversée. Ainsi, Désiré Raoul-Rochette (1789 - 1845) écrivait à propos du parcours : «C’est au-delà du village du Simplon que se déploient dans toute leur étendue, les magnifiques horreurs de cette route étonnante[…].»
A l'entrée supérieure des gorges, peu après le lieu-dit Gabi, la route passait par le tunnel du même nom, long d'environ 65 mètres. Celui-ci a été tellement élargi lors de la construction de la N9 dans les années 1960 qu'il n'en reste plus rien aujourd'hui.

Le premier des deux ponts qui enjambent la Doveria est le Ponte Alto, en français le pont de la passerelle haute. On y voit encore son tablier d'origine en bois, remplacé par une arche en pierre entre 1850 et 1880.

La deuxième traversée de la Doveria se fait par le pont de Casermetta. Cette vue de l'itinéraire qui s'étire régulièrement au fond de la gorge sauvage illustre particulièrement bien ce que Raoul-Rochette écrivait à propos de la route du Simplon : 
«Ce qui étonne surtout, de la part de celui-ci, c’est que régulier, autant qu’imperturbable dons [sic] sa marche, il ne cède nulle part aux difficultés qu’il affronte, et cache une extrême audace, sous cette audace même. J’ai vu ailleurs des sentiers taillés dans le roc ou suspendus sur des abîmes […]. Mais ici, c’est une voie sûre et commode, d’une largeur et d’une pente constamment égales, qui poursuit son cours majestueux à travers tous les obstacles […].”

Avec ses quelque 222 mètres, le Grand Tunnel est certainement la réalisation la plus impressionnante des mineurs et des ingénieurs. Deux grandes ouvertures ont été ménagées pour l'éclairage. Le tunnel a été creusé dans la roche en 18 mois, pendant lesquels 200 ouvriers ont travaillé jour et nuit et ont creusé la roche de quatre côtés à la fois.

La sortie de la Grande Galerie mène directement dans la vallée de l'Alpjerbach. Les masses d'eau tumultueuses de ce dernier sont surmontées par un autre pont. C'est l'un des rares ponts de la route du Simplon à avoir été construit dès le début avec une arche en pierre - même si cela allait à l'encontre des instructions de l'ingénieur en chef Nicolas Céard.

De toutes les vues de ce Voyage pittoresque, celle-ci est celle qui se plie le mieux au goût du public : le voyageur solitaire dans la nature sauvage, par une nuit de pleine lune, est sans doute l'incarnation du sentiment romantique de la vie.
En même temps, nous quittons ainsi le territoire de la Confédération. La prochaine vue se trouvera déjà dans le royaume de Sardaigne.

Iselle abritait le poste de douane italien. Le texte d'accompagnement souligne le paysage plus doux que celui des gorges de Gondo, où les sapins ont été remplacés par des noyers et des châtaigniers. Côté rivière, la galerie - l'une des plus discrètes de la ligne du Simplon - repose sur un seul pilier rocheux. Une chute d'eau apparaît à nouveau au centre de l'image.

La plaine du Val d'Ossola s'étend maintenant devant le voyageur, dans le plus grand contraste avec le paysage précédent. En 1809, il fallait entre 14 et 15 heures pour aller de Domodossola à Brigue en passant par le Simplon. Aujourd'hui, il ne faut plus qu'une heure en voiture pour aller de Domodossola à Brigue.

Crevola est la réunion de deux grands passages des hautes Alpes, le passage du Simplon et le passage de Gries. Le passage de Gries n'était guère utilisé par les voyageurs, mais par les muletiers qui l'empruntaient pour se rendre en Valais. 
Ebel et le commentateur du Voyage pittoresque décrivent tous deux ce pont comme un chef-d'œuvre architectural. Des piliers de plus de 30 m de haut soutiennent le tablier en bois d'environ 45 m de long qui enjambe la rivière, appelée ici Diveria.

"Ces collines et ces montagnes n'offrent plus l'aspect aride de celles de la Suisse et du Valais; leurs contours sont adoucis, et une verdure fraîche et riante remplace presque par-tout les rochers. Ce site [...] donne une idée de la différence qui existe dans le caractere pittoresque des pays qui sont en deçà et en delà des Alpes."

Villadossola a dû offrir à Gabriel Lory fils la seule vue "pittoresque" de toute la vallée d'Ossola. Le texte d'accompagnement nous apprend d'ailleurs que le reste de la vallée ne présente plus aucun point de vue intéressant pour l'amateur de peinture. La plaine bien construite domine, les montagnes sont toutes pyramidales et n'ont qu'une faible valeur picturale.

C'est avec cette vue que nous arrivons au lac Majeur, au sujet duquel Ebel écrit : "Le caractère naturel de ce lac est la haute sauvagerie alpine alliée à la douceur et à la beauté du sol et du climat italiens, l'étroitesse de l'enfermement associée à une vaste étendue et à des vues lointaines"

La route traverse ici la Selvaspessa sur un pont à cinq arches en granit blanc veiné de rouge.

Le lac Majeur, situé entre la Suisse et l'Italie, servait à transporter les marchandises d'Allemagne et de Suisse vers l'Italie. Les bateaux remontaient le Toccia et descendaient le Ticino, d'où un canal menait à Milan, où ils transportaient les produits de la région, comme le charbon, le bois, le foin, le marbre blanc de Mergozzo et le granit rose de Baveno. Outre cette fonction pratique de transport de marchandises, le lac Majeur et ses îles étaient également un lieu d'inspiration important pour différents écrivains comme Goethe, Hemingway et Stendhal. Ce dernier aimait à répéter : "Si vous avez un cœur et une chemise, vendez la chemise et allez voir les rives du lac Majeur".

En 1630, l'île n'était encore qu'un rocher. Le Palazzo Borromeo, que l'on peut voir sur cette aquatinte, a été commandé dès 1632 par le comte Borromée. Napoléon a séjourné dans ce palais en 1797 avec sa femme Joséphine de Beauharnais. Il existe encore aujourd'hui dans le palais une pièce portant le nom de Napoléon. D'autres personnalités célèbres ont séjourné au Palazzo Borromeo, comme Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Stendhal, Ernest Hemingway, Richard Wagner, la reine Victoria et même le prince Charles et Lady Diana.

En été 1809, lorsque Gabriel Lory fils et Maximilien de Meuron se trouvaient sur le lac Majeur, il n'y avait pas encore de pont sur le Ticino à Sesto Calende. A la place, un bac reliait les deux tronçons de route venant du Simplon et menant à Milan.
Ici, à l'extrémité sud du lac, un regard en arrière vers le nord nous rappelle encore une fois le voyage : nous avons traversé la chaîne des Alpes avec le massif du Mont Rose au centre pour nous attarder maintenant dans le sud ensoleillé.
