Am rechten Ufer der Rhone entwickelte sich schon in der Jungsteinzeit eine Siedlung. In der römischen und frühmittelalterlichen Zeit lebten die Menschen dann linkerhand, wo auf der Ansicht die Kathedrale St-Pierre auf dem höchsten Punkt des Cité-Hügels zu sehen ist.
Durch das Wirken Johannes Calvins ab 1540 entwickelte sich Genf zu einem Zentrum der Reformation und wurde auch «das reformierte Rom» genannt. Obwohl die Stadt nur mit Bern, Solothurn und Zürich im späteren 16. Jahrhundert Bündnisse schliessen konnte, berichtet uns Ebel, dass sie schon immer als eidgenössische Stadt betrachtet wurde. Das machte Genf um 1800 mit rund 25'000 Einwohnern zur grössten Stadt der Schweiz – mehr als doppelt so viel wie Zürich.

Sobald die Grenze zum Königreich Savoyen überschritten ist, findet sich der Reisende in einem Gebiet wieder, das sich stark von der Eidgenossenschaft unterscheidet – jedenfalls, wenn man dem Begleittext Glauben schenkt: 
«Nachdem wir Cologny verlassen haben, entfernt sich der Weg vom Seeufer und führt sieben Lieues lang durch schlecht bewirtschaftetes Land, die kleine Stadt Thonon, die ehemalige Hauptstadt des Chablais, und triste Dörfer, in denen alles von der Armut der Bewohner kündet.»
Doch Linderung für die durch den monotonen Wegverlauf ermüdete Touristin ist bereits in Sicht: Der elegante Pavillon der Bäder von Amphion. Bevor das benachbarte Evian ab 1823 zur grossen Bäderstadt aufstieg, war Amphion für seine eisenhaltigen Mineralquellen bekannt. Die drei Gründe für die Beliebtheit des Ortes laut Begleittext: Seine angenehme Lage, die Schönheit seiner Umgebung und die gute Gesellschaft, die sich dort zusammenfindet.

Saint-Gingolph liegt am Ufer des Genfersees gegenüber von Vevey an der Grenze zwischen Frankreich und dem Wallis. Seit jeher war der Ort zweigeteilt. Zur Zeit der Entstehung dieser Ansicht gehörte er Hälfte zum Königreich Sardinien-Piemont und zur Hälfte zum Kanton Waadt. Die Grenze zwischen Frankreich und der Schweiz wird durch den Fluss Morge gebildet, der durch den Kanton Waadt fließt und in den Genfersee mündet.

Den Touristen war das östliche Ende des Genfersees um 1811 vor allem aus Jean-Jacques Rousseaus Briefroman Julie ou la nouvelle Héloïse bekannt. Dieser war bereits 1761 erschienen und erlebte bis 1800 mindestens 70 Auflagen – ein veritabler Bestseller des 18. Jahrhunderts. Die tragische Liebesgeschichte zwischen der Patriziertochter Julie und ihrem Hauslehrer Saint-Preux diente Rousseau vor allem dazu, seine gesellschaftlichen, wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Anliegen darzulegen. Er wird als Vorläufer und Ausgangspunkt der Romantik angesehen. Ganz romantisch durch knorrige Bäume gerahmt präsentiert uns Gabriel Lory (père?) denn auch den Ausblick auf das Delta der Rhonemündung und den Dent de Jaman.

Das Schloss St-Maurice wurde Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts erbaut und Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts durch einen Brand vollständig zerstört. Das am Eingang des Rhônetals gelegene Schloss diente als Sitz eines Statthalters, als Wach- und Zollstation und zwischen dem 18. und 19. Jahrhundert als Waisenhaus und Altersheim.

Der Pissevache befindet an der Straße zwischen Saint-Maurice und Martigny und hat im 19. Jahrhundert viele Reisende beeindruckt. Er wird vom Wildbach Salenche gebildet und führte damals reichlich Wasser. Robert Glutz von Blotzheim empfiehlt, den Wasserfall am Morgen zu besuchen, da die Sonnenstrahlen einen Regenbogen zeichnen. Seit 1953 wird ein Teil des Wassers oberhalb des Pissevache zur Stromproduktion abgezweigt. Seither wirkt er viel weniger imposant.

Die erste Ansicht von Sion wurde vom Mont d'Orge aus gezeichnet. Der Begleittext ist nicht sehr schmeichelhaft für die Walliser: der Autor schreibt wortwörtlich, dass "das Aussehen der Dörfer, die man durchquert, beweist, dass die Vorwürfe der Faulheit und der schlechten Sauberkeit, die man den Wallisern macht, nur allzu begründet sind". Sion hingegen zählt er aufgrund seiner weissen Häusser, der beiden Schlösser und der Gletscher, die es umgeben, zu den bemerkenswertesten Orten der Schweiz.

Zum Auftakt der Bergstrecke über den Simplon präsentiert uns Gabriel Lory fils auf den ersten Blick eine klassische Stadtansicht. Im Gegensatz zu früheren Darstellungen von Brig rückt hier jedoch der Alpenübergang über den Simplon ins Blickfeld. Die gleichmässig ansteigende neue Passstrasse wurde 1801 auf Befehl Kaiser Napoleons (1769 – 1821) begonnen und 1805 vollendet. Sie zieht sich durch das gesamte Bild und zeichnet sich in den bewaldeten Hängen im Mittelgrund ab.

Im Zentrum der Ansicht steht die Stadt Brig mit der Jesuitenkirche und den Türmen des Stockalperpalastes, die von einer früheren Blütezeit des Passverkehrs künden. Im 17. Jahrhundert hatte Kaspar Stockalper (1609 – 1691) die Passstrasse bereits einmal ausbauen lassen, nachdem sie zuvor kaum begangen worden war. Die Kontrolle über den Pass vermehrte seinen Reichtum und trug ihm am französischen Königshof den inoffiziellen Titel «le roi du Simplon» ein. 

Stockalpers Entmachtung 1679 führte zu einem neuerlichen Zerfall der Infrastruktur. Der Simplon gelangte erst durch den von Napoleon befohlenen Ausbau wieder zu internationaler Bedeutung.

Acht Brücken und sieben Tunnels sowie zahlreiche Dämme und Stützmauern überwinden die natürlichen Hindernisse. 
Der französische Schriftsteller und Archäologe Désiré Raoul-Rochette (1789 – 1854) schrieb 1820: "Der Simplonübergang hat in der Arbeit der Menschen nichts, was ihm vergleichbar wäre. Er ist auf einem Raum von vierzehn Lieues, von Brig bis Domo-d'Ossola, eine Art Schlachtfeld, auf dem die Natur und die Kunst beständig miteinander ringen [...]."

Der leitende Ingenieur Nicolas Céard (1745 – 1821) hatte eine gleichmässige Steigung der gesamten Strecke von 3 – 8 % und eine Strassenbreite von 5 – 8 m vorgesehen. Deshalb konnte der Strassenverlauf nicht dem mittelalterlichen Weg folgen wie Stockalpers Strasse, sondern musste entlang der Talhänge, über Bäche, durch Felsvorsprünge und die furchterregende Gondo-Schlucht geführt werden.

Am westlichen Abhang des Mäderhorns gegen das Taferna-Tal durchquerte die Strasse den rund 31 m lange Schallbett-Tunnel. 
Die ab 1960 gebaute Nationalstrasse folgt weitgehend dem Verlauf der Strasse von 1805, was die ausserordentliche Leistung von Napoleons Ingenieuren und Strassenbauern unterstreicht. Allerdings ist dadurch fast nichts mehr von der alten Strasse erhalten. Auch die Schallbett-Galerie fiel der Nationalstrasse zum Opfer.

Die Gletschergalerie mit dem im Vordergrund dargestellten Strassenabschnitt ist der einzige heute noch im Zustand des 19. Jahrhunderts erhaltene Teil der Napoleonstrasse auf der Nordseite des Simplon. 
Nicolas Céard wollte ursprünglich den gesamten Strassenverlauf in diesem ausgesetzten und schwierigen Gelände unterhalb des Chaltwassergletschers in einen Tunnel verlegen. Diesem gigantischen Vorhaben stimmte Napoleon jedoch nicht zu.

Etwas unterhalb der Passhöhe in Richtung Italien liess Napoleon ein grosszügig dimensioniertes Hospiz nach dem Vorbild des Grossen Sankt Bernhards errichten. Der Bau begann 1813, wurde aber erst 1831 durch den Kanton Wallis fertiggestellt, da der Sturz Napoleons den Bau unterbrach. Zu sehen ist jedoch der bereits 1808 vorbereitete Bauplatz.

Das Dorf Simplon war schon immer direkt von der Passstrasse und dem Verkehr, den sie brachte, abhängig. Nachdem 1906 der Simplon-Eisenbahntunnel eröffnet worden war, fühlte sich die Gemeinde so sehr von der übrigen Schweiz abgeschnitten, dass sie 1907 aus Protest geschlossen einer Eidgenössischen Abstimmung fernblieb.

Das anspruchsvollste Teilstück der Simplonstrasse führte durch die Gondoschlucht. Furchterregend war die Schlucht sowohl für die Ingenieure und Bauarbeiter als auch für die Reisenden. Doch scheinen letztere auch einen gewissen Nervenkitzel aus ihrer Begehung gezogen zu haben. So schrieb Désiré Raoul-Rochette (1789 – 1845) über die Strecke: "Es ist jenseits des Dorfes Simplon, wo sich die herrlichen Schrecken dieser erstaunlichen Straße in ihrer ganzen Ausdehnung entfalten[...]."
Am oberen Eingang zur Schlucht, kurz nach dem Ort Gabi, führte die Strasse durch den gleichnamigen, etwa 65 m langen Tunnel. Dieser wurde beim Bau der N9 in den 1960er-Jahren derart erweitert, dass heute nichts mehr von ihm übrig ist.

Die erste von zwei Brücken über die Doveria ist der Ponte Alto, zu Deutsch Hochstegbrücke. Hier ist noch seine ursprüngliche hölzerne Fahrbahn zu sehen, die zwischen 1850 und 1880 durch einen steinernen Bogen ersetzt wurde.

Die zweite Überquerung der Doveria findet mittels der Casermettabrücke statt. Diese Ansicht der sich am Grund der wilden Schlucht gleichmässig hinziehenden Route illustriert besonders gut, was Raoul-Rochette über die Simplonstrasse schrieb: 
"Was bei ihr am meisten erstaunt, ist, dass sie gleichmäßig und unerschütterlich wandert, nirgends den Schwierigkeiten nachgibt, denen sie begegnet, und unter dieser Kühnheit selbst eine extreme Kühnheit verbirgt. Ich habe anderswo Pfade gesehen, die in den Fels gehauen oder über Abgründe gehängt sind [...]. Aber hier ist es ein sicherer und bequemer Weg von gleichbleibender Breite und Steigung, der seinen majestätischen Lauf über alle Hindernisse hinweg fortsetzt [...]."

Mit etwa 222 m ist der Grosse Tunnel sicher die beeindruckendste Leistung der Bergleute und Ingenieure. Zur Beleuchtung sind zwei grosse Öffnungen ausgespart wurden. Der Tunnel wurde innert 18 Monaten durch den Fels getrieben, während derer 200 Arbeiter Tag und Nacht geschuftet und den Fels von vier Seiten gleichzeitig ausgehöhlt haben.

Der Ausgang der Grossen Galerie führt direkt in das Tal des Alpjerbachs. Dessen tosende Wassermassen werden mittels einer weiteren Brücke überwunden. Als eine der wenigen Brücken an der Simplonstrasse wurde sie schon von Anfang an mit einem steinernen Bogen gebaut – wenn auch entgegen den Anweisungen des obersten Ingenieurs Nicolas Céard.

Von allen Ansichten dieser Voyage pittoresque beugt sich diese hier am ehesten dem Publikumsgeschmack: Der einsame Reisende in der wilden Natur, notabene in einer Vollmondnacht ist wohl der Inbegriff des romantischen Lebensgefühls.
Zugleich verlassen wir somit das Gebiet der Eidgenossenschaft. Die nächste Ansicht wird sich schon im Königreich Sardinien befinden.

In Iselle befand sich die italienische Zollstation. Der Begleittext hebt die im Vergleich zur Gondoschlucht sanftere Landschaft hervor, in der die Tannenbäume durch Nuss- und Kastanienbäume ersetzt seien. Die Galerie - eine der unscheinbareren der Simplonstrecke - ruht zur Flussseite hin auf einem einzigen Felspfeiler. Ins Bildzentrum gerückt erscheint wiederum ein Wasserfall.

In grösstem Kontrast zur zurückliegenden Landschaft erstreckt sich vor dem Reisenden nun die Ebene der Val d’Ossola. Im Jahr 1809 dauerte der Weg von Domodossola über den Simplon nach Brig zwischen 14 und 15 Stunden. Heute braucht man von Domodossola nach Brig nur noch eine Stunde mit dem Auto.

Crevola ist die Vereinigung von zwei grossen Hochalpenübergängen, dem Simplon- und dem Griesübergang. Der Griesübergang wurde von Reisenden kaum genutzt, wohl aber von Maultiertreibern, die auf dem Weg ins Wallis diesen Weg benutzten. 
Sowohl Ebel als auch der Kommentator der Voyage pittoresque beschreiben diese Brücke als ein architektonisches Meisterwerk. Über 30 m hohe Pfeiler stützen die etwa 45 m lange hölzerne Fahrbahn über den Fluss, der hier Diveria heisst.

"Diese Hügel und Berge haben nicht mehr das karge Aussehen der Schweiz und des Wallis; ihre Konturen sind sanft und die Felsen sind fast überall von frischem, lachendem Grün ersetzt. Dieser Ort [...] vermittelt eine Vorstellung von dem Unterschied im malerischen Charakter der Länder diesseits und jenseits der Alpen."

Villadossola muss für Gabriel Lory fils die einzige "pittoreske" Ansicht in der ganzen Valle d'Ossola hergegeben haben. Der Begleittext unterrichtet uns denn auch, dass der Rest des Tales für den Liebhaber der Malerei keine Blickpunkte von Interesse mehr ergebe. Die wohlbebaute Ebene dominiert, die Berge seien alle pyramidenförmig und von kleinem bildkünstlerischem Wert.

Mit dieser Ansicht kommen wir am Lago Maggiore an, über den Ebel schreibt: "Der Naturcharakter dieses Sees ist hohe Alpenwildheit mit dem Milden und Schönen des italienischen Bodens und Klima's, enge Eingeschlossenheit mit weiter Ausdehnung und Fernsichten verbunden."

Die Strasse überquert hier die Selvaspessa auf einer fünfbogigen Brücke aus weissem Granit mit roten Adern.

Der Lago Maggiore liegt zwischen der Schweiz und Italien und diente dem Transport von Waren aus Deutschland und der Schweiz nach Italien. Die Schiffe fuhren den Toccia hinauf und den Ticino hinunter, von wo aus ein Kanal nach Mailand führte, wo sie die Produkte der Region, wie Kohle, Holz, Heu, weißen Marmor aus Mergozzo und rosa Granit aus Baveno, transportierten. Neben dieser praktischen Funktion des Warentransports waren der Lago Maggiore und seine Inseln auch ein wichtiger Ort der Inspiration für verschiedene Schriftsteller wie Goethe, Hemingway und Stendhal. Letzterer wiederholte gerne: "Wenn Sie ein Herz und ein Hemd haben, verkaufen Sie das Hemd und sehen Sie sich die Ufer des Lago Maggiore an".

Im Jahr 1630 war die Insel noch ein Felsen. Der Palazzo Borromeo, der auf dieser Aquatinta zu sehen ist, wurde bereits 1632 vom Grafen Borromäus in Auftrag gegeben. Napoleon hielt sich 1797 mit seiner Frau Josephine de Beauharnais in diesem Palast auf. Im Palast gibt es noch heute einen nach Napoleon benannten Raum. Andere berühmte Persönlichkeiten haben im Palazzo Borromeo gewohnt, wie z. B. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Stendhal, Ernest Hemingway, Richard Wagner, Königin Victoria und sogar Prinz Charles und Lady Diana.

Im Sommer 1809, als sich Gabriel Lory fils und Maximilien de Meuron am Lago Maggiore aufhielten, gab es in Sesto Calende noch keine Brücke über den Ticino. Stattdessen verband eine Fähre die beiden Strassenabschnitte vom Simplon herkommend und nach Mailand führend.
Hier, am südlichen Ende des Sees, ruft uns der Blick zurück nach Norden die Reise nochmals in Erinnerung: Die Alpenkette mit dem Monte Rosa-Massiv im Mittelpunkt haben wir überquert, um nun im sonnigen Süden zu verweilen.
